CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

BUZZ

Michaela and Simon are sitting on my stoop when I arrive. The weather is cozy, so hopefully they aren’t too annoyed with having to wait outside again. Michaela brushes our son’s hair away while he stares intently at his book.

“Sorry, sorry,” I chant when I hop out. I dash to my trunk to start the big process of pulling out groceries. “I got caught in lines at the supermarket.”

“Come on, Simon. Let’s help your dad carry the bags inside.” Michaela doesn’t seem too peeved; I think she’s glad I don’t have pizza again.

“Thank you,” I say.

“No worries.” She hoists a large sack of produce. “We have much to discuss,” she whispers. I know a gossip-hungry look when I see one. I can’t even sputter a protest before Simon approaches us.

“Did you buy hummus, Buzz?”

“Since when do you eat hummus?” I ask.

“And since when do you call your dad Buzz?” Michaela tacks on. We share a look of shock while our son simply shrugs, gripping his backpack. I don’t want my son to call me my first name, like we’re peers.

“I don’t know. You always call him Buzz.”

“But he’s your father,” she says with a firm, chastising tone. She hands him a small bag and he shrugs.

“Okay, Father. Any hummus?”

I wrinkle my nose. Father seems so formal. “I didn’t know you eat hummus. I thought kids were supposed to be asking for animal crackers or fruit snacks. And a ‘please’ wouldn’t kill you either.”

“Please would you buy me hummus next time?”

“Your dad went out of his way to get all these groceries,” Michaela adds as I unlock the front door. “You don’t want to eat greasy pizza all the time, right?” There it is.

“No,” Simon replies. He drops the bag with condiments—all plastic bottles, fortunately—in the kitchen and then wanders to his room.

I want to tell him to clean up for dinner, but truthfully, I don’t care. Right now, Michaela is staring at me like I went on a date with the hottest boy in school and she wants the details. In a lot of ways, I did. My weekend with Evan was nothing short of amazing. Between the laughs we shared and the mind-blowing sex, I don’t think I’ll be able to look at him at work without getting a hard-on. I’m fortunate that I had the rest of the week away from DTF, focusing on training Ryan one-on-one in a nearby boxing gym. But I’ll have to see him again eventually.

My hands tremble while I put away loaves of bread and meticulously move stuff around my pantry, all to avoid her gaze. Moments later, I turn to see her tapping her foot with her arms crossed. “Well?”

“Well,” I reply with a forced smile.

She takes my hand and leads me to my kitchen table. She made quick work of the rest of the groceries, so now I have no excuse to stall this conversation. “Tell me about your big date!” she pleads. Simon is off in his room watching videos about whales or sharks probably, so I scratch my neck and look back at Michaela.
